When all of the plant matter is removed from a city and replaced with concrete and pavement, the city becomes significantly warmer than the surrounding areas. This raising of temperatures is called the urban heat island effect, and has a negative impact on the environment and heat related illnesses in a city. One of the main ways to combat this effect is through reintroducing plants back into cities.
