Childish Mimicry
Imagination based mimicking toy

Prompt: create furniture based on demographics
The goal of this project was to create a piece that would be used by children and encourage a love of gardening in them. This process included interviewing parents, observing how children interact with educational objects, and designing based on this information.

To understand more about what was needed for this design, surveys were sent out to parents of toddlers and young children. They were asked a series of questions including: what the parents want out of a toy, which toys the children use the most, which toys the children use the longest, and what the parents actively avoid looking for in toys. The results were that parents avoid “gimmicky” toys, especially ones with sound, because children don’t use them for very long. The toys that were used the most and the longest were imagination based, like blocks and toy kitchens. These toys encouraged kinds to come up with their own stories and were different every time the child used them. I wanted this piece to be like a toy kitchen but with plants to encourage a love of gardening.
